Vienna Ensemble Pro – thoughts?

Vienna Ensemble Pro – thoughts?

on the same machine as EigenD, does it introduce perceptible latency?

Im seriously considering having an EigenD setup, which proxies to VEP.

the reasons are simple:

– easier configuration, vep is great for having multiple setups etc

– performance – multi core support

performance, EigenD has a single fast thread that all AU use*, this is going to cause issues when running multiple audio units either in different rigs/splits but also when using audio units for effects. it would be nice to be spreading load across cores.

personally, ive already found running audio units in daw, has worked well… which is similar to vep concept.

another alternative would be to host vsts in max, using poly… this opens up not only midi but also interfacing via osc.

* some audio units support multithread/core, but its far from ‘the norm’

  1. I have positively rely on VEP  for some years now, allowed some magic to happened between machines (even between win-mac, but you know all this)

About latency you have the choice of 0 or 1 to 4 buffers (1-85ms 2- 170ms and so on) nor it is (edit) imperceptibly, with 0 is non existing ( no way i can measure this, but I believe)

Then come the multi-core affair… something that, for ex running KAIVO becomes evident; I can run 4 instances inside VEP easily! not so with EigenD…

There is some “add-ons” with VEP namely Audio input, event input, surround.

    MAX… never used.

For the future maybe osc for VEP, cherry on top?

  2. One more thought Mark Harris  …

DAW’s – what i find appealing when hosting AU/VST in a playing-reahersing-performing situation (say against a old school recording environment like Logic, Cubase even AB lIve)  clean visualization, robust  without losing flexibility; all others there is too much “things in the way” when you just want to play, play with sounds, maybe just a trick or two. I do elect EigenD, with VEP being an awesome right arm, ok in the end of the line to a DAW.

  3. Yeah, I think those are the reasons I’m keen on VEP. I find myself using a DAW often, just because its easier to switch AUs and also getting that bit more performance. So thinking VEP will give me that, without all the bits of the DAW I don’t need.

Think I’ll checkout the manual, see if there are any downsides e.g. mapping params etc.

  4. do you need one elicenser for each machine?

or just one connected to one of the machines on the network?

(e.g. let say I have EigenD + 1 VEP on one machine, and another VEP as slave on another = 2 elicensers?)

  5. how do you have have it setup in EigenD?

    multiple audio unit rigs?

one with ‘server connection’ other with event connection?

I assume then  audio sent back as one channel per rig?

the disadvantage I see of this is multiple audio return streams – when I could just have one mixed in VEP.

BUT the issue is, EigenD does not support multi channel Audio unit… ( you can get a max of 2, one though audio unit inputs and then a second thru the midi input on the audio unit)

I think I need to fix audio unit, so you can connect multiple midi converters to the midi input.

or have you found a more cunning way?

or is the multiple audio return streams a ‘non-issue’.

(though would not allow for a master bus send fx… I use this for reverb)

  6. Sorry… head spinning over midi device 😉

umm.. quickly idea (as VEP is very flexible ) and there are many ways off “working” , you have Buses and sends inside VEP!  as to multi audio returns, not sure if i follow; although for me as you say a non-issue at lest in a live situation.

  7. aaa sort of yes, ex. Kontakt loaded with multi instruments or different VST’s that have specific mid channels I can “jump” too…

Yet about multiple midi  converters to a single AU midi input… that limitation bothers many eigenharpers 😉
