External midi clock & eigenD

External midi clock & eigenD

has anyone got EigenD to sync to an external midi clock?

Im having ‘issues’ with it…

Ive got my synth sending midi clock, and ableton live is able to sync to it happily.

But EigenD – argghhh

I select midi input port (ProMidi14), then enable midi clock (in midi 1 tab), and then turn on metronome – nothing, nada, zilch!

Now get this….

Ive noticed, if go to ableton, and get it to retransmit the clock on Eigenlabs 1, the metronome goes crazy, (as if getting 2 clock signals) if I then stop the retransmission, it then syncs up immediately with my Synth, and i can change tempo on synth and eigenD follows. (though i note, tempo doesnt change in Stage :o(  )

I don’t get it, it shoudn’t even be listening on Eigenlabs1, only ProMidi14. but it seems it needs some kind of start signal on eigenlabs1, and only then starts listening to the midiinput port!?!!

Annoyingly, i cannot sync my synth to eigenD clock, as the synth doesnt like the fact that EigenD is broadcasting the clock on every midi channel! (ive multi midi output, one for each channel connected to ProMidi 14 out) …

I know i could create a dedicated midi output for the clock, but this is a pain, and really id prefer to sync EigenD to the clock in the synth.

arghhhh….

  1. I do have my share of arghhh… collection on MTC sync (and some others on SMPTE) But until now I always win!

AB live to EigenD… seems ok and stable….( thru IAC-midi input 1)

In EigenD only enable -midi clock enable – when EigenD slave

I cannot  use my Nord G2 to send steady MTC (but this is documented…)

    MidiPipe to filter stuff?

Is there any known issues from synth MTC?

  2. Thanks, I did have eigenD working ok before ( I think ) with live as master, I think using eigenlabs1 though.

Will need to test that again.

But no combination worked well of live transmission worked when I had TI sending clock.

I wonder if eigenD has to have the input port saved, and then restart eigenD?

I’ve had a few issues with eigend and physical midi ports 😦

Virus Ti , usual whines about delay in sync time, but none that something cannot sync to it. Also as I said Live is sync’d so I’m assuming some flakey in eigenD.

  3. Let me know how it goes… or so you won’t arghhhh alone 😉

Couple things came to my mind:

    – double check cables… midi interface? only have one choice?

-settings this midi interface (can’t recall is it USB or Firewire)

    Maybe it’s not the TI…

-This was a typical use of the phisycal Din plugs on the base station…

      any news on this??

  4. sorry, couldn’t face looing at this again before now…

ok, it seems all a bit flakey, as its kind of working now.

I think there may be an issue, that EigenD is expecting some kind of ‘Start’ message when the clock starts, but with the TI the clock is always sent so there is no specific start/stop.

I can now kind of get it working, it I sync live to the TI, and then get Live to rebroadcast it to EigenD, as it will send the start/stop when you start the track.

perhaps that is the best I can expect?

  5. ok, sorted it out… oddities on all sides :o)

Synth doesn’t send start/stop , which it appears both EigenD and Live need. (Live kind of works, if you hit EXT after starting transport, but then wont sync its outputs)

EigenD, seems a bit weak around clocks

    –  it will not start the metronome without a midi start

    – Also it rebroadcasts the incoming midi clock messages to any attached midi output, regardless if they are active rigs or not, this ends up in midi loops.

so the way I have it working now is:

    – DAW (live) is master

    – TI, sync to external (via ProMidi14)

    – EigenD, midi clock enable, delete midi clock from ALL midi rigs, to stop EigenD rebroadcasting to Midi (and so to TI again via ProMidi14)

I think the better design for midi clocking in setups, would be

    – create a dedicated midi input for clock, connected to metro

    – create a dedicated midi output for clock (you could create N of these if you want EigenD to output to many places)

    then:

    – to enable clock output, you just browse midi clock output

    – to enable clock input, you browse midi clock input, and enable on metronome.

this way you have full control over clocking,

  6. Yes, that start/stop issues… even in AB live.

I do have it like this too – AB Live is Master; the rest follows 😉

Thoughts… General feeling like Stage and some more; that unfinished/incomplete status, but yes, dedicated input/output would be better.

#Creator could help a bit or not so?!?

  7. Yeah, now I know whats involved easy to do with creator, just need to remove the clocks from the midi rigs, and put dedicated ones externally :o)

I guess there is some disagreement over midi clock, seems the more DAW focused you are, the more your expecting it to do full transport control, rather than just sync.

EigenD also has a some quirks in this area, if you are sync’d to a clock say live, and its running  if you stop the metro, and then restart it will not restart the arrangers – only will restart if you restart the transport.
