Audio input into EigenD?
k, so decided to take the plunge and get Live, inevitable really.
( I may have a few questions for you live users out there!)
Im now trying to get setup that I like working.
Basically for the moment, my plan when using Live, is to host VSTs in live, and also pipe audio from EigenD to Live via Jack OSX.
No problem there!
But then what Ive tried to do is pipe Audio back from Live to EigenD so that I can pipe it to the headphones on the Alpha.
Ive wired up Jack OSX fine, and Ive changed EigenD setup to wire the audio input to the headphone – but nada, nothing, zilch.
I know JackOSX is doings it job, as same channel routes to mac speakers, and im getting output there.
I know headphones works (e.g. enabled, gain, quality), as Ive wired EigenD mixer output to them, and get output from them.
But it would appear nothing is coming thru the audio input!
It would appear there is no audio input in EigenD…
any thoughts?
Geert Bevin did you have this working? I know Randy Brown mentioned the other day he never has got it to work. any tricks?
( i also tried wiring eigend input back to output, back to live … and nothing there)
Scrap that… I just deleted the audio input ports and added them again, and now its works!! … very odd

Cool. I was going to mention that the Focusrite Pro14 ( and I’m sure other FR models) have really neat features for this All latency free. I by happenstance bought this ( had another FR interface I liked). Mark Powell turned me on to the additional features.
What audio interface do you use? Don’t recall seeing you mention.
BTW: Happy to help with Live if I can.

Ok Mark Harris 1+ for getting LIVE at last !!
Next… a proper audio interface, couple ins/outs. (Better integration even with your Virus)

Yeah, my demo just expired, but expect I’ll do so too.

yeah António Machado … im trying to avoid spending yet more money, its been a bit ‘excessive’ recently…. and thats just on music, don’t even get me started on our house costs!
Currently im making do with the virus, as its also acts as an audio interface.
The issue with this, is my USB system is becoming a bit overloaded, the eigenharps and virus are all USB 1.0/1.1 devices. and really should all be on separate buses.
So, my aim is to move all audio interaction off of USB and onto to firewire by using a firewire based AI. (except perhaps headphone audio to the alpha which i really do like!)
My virus has 6 1/4″ outputs (3 xL+R), 2 1/2″ input (L+R) and spdif in/out (mirrors outputs 1+2).
I quite like the look of FR Pro 14, I guess this will allow me to connect as follows:
FRPro14
spdif in – virus spdif out (out 1&2) (fx loop out)
spdif out – virus spdif in (fx loop in)
Analog In 1 – virus out 3
Analog In 2 – virus out 4
Analog out 1 – virus in 1
Analog out 2 – virus in 2
Analog out 3 & 3 – monitors (hmm, which i dont yet have!)
firewire -> mac.
I guess then if I want to connect more outputs from virus I can then use an analogue mixer…. but currently I don’t use more than 4 inputs.
(i use 2 for synth output, and 2 for fx output when using virus as an fx unit)
Thoughts, will this work with FR 14? are the spdif independent to analog in/out?
(24 doesnt seem to get me much more, more outputs, but its input i lack)
Whats peoples thoughts on spdif?
any other ideas… this is really not an area i know anything about !!!

“…avoid spending yet more money”
Yes agree, even worse starting from ground up.
but, even if its overloaded your USB system, maybe a more important item is speakers (near filed monitors) is the only equipment that we actually “hear”.
Your connection ideas are all correct, and yes SPDIF are independent connections (digital types ones, so clearer sounding)

yeah thats the problem, every time I think I just need to get X, then usually I find I need Y & Z too :o)
so looks like a Focusrite 14, monitors, headphones and cables.
any suggestions on some ‘budget’ monitors, headphones and cables?
i assume i just need 1/4″ TRS plugs and spider
… i dont have xlr, unless there are 1/4″ converters and they are preferred?

You can get by with 5″ monitors, but 8″ are better for reproducing the bass range. I use KRKs and have been satisfied. Reasonably priced. Unfortunately there is a bit of an investment. I went thru this in 2011 and early 2012. Got my equipment, VSTs, ect. Thought I was set. Then added the Alpha. 😉

will take a look Randy Brown , dont want something too big, as I mainly use headphones 🙂
I assume I want TRS 1/4″ plugs, is the focusrite using balanced input/outputs?
Also, it looks like I can get 1/4″ TRS to XLR cables, this would presumably give me two extra inputs on the front.
one thing that worries me, is its seems like a small button which turns on phantom power – will this cause a problem if connecting it to output on a synth. (i.e. its putting 48v, or are these on different pins?)

ah, does combo xlr mean its one of those TRS & XLR?

Damm X,Y and Zsssss….
Nearfiled monitors were my toughest choice for my studio, to date (even had nightmares an all)
But time, an the so called “bedroom studios” brought a huge amount of choices available. I always say personal taste comes to equation here (when possible, but desirable) is test and listen to as many as one can!
Can take a look at usual suspects, Musicstore – Thomann… will get back.

Yes, same female plug accepts both connections (one at a time… )

You can use a 1/4″ TRS to 1/4″ TRS cable or jack-jack cable, an sure use those combo plugs, and no worries about phantom power; power does not “travel” on jack cables…
